Titanium Dioxide – Exposure

There are no epidemiological studies on the effects of nanoscale titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles available at present. Comprehensive titanium dioxide studies carried out in the recent years have shown, however, that there is no increased risk of lung cancer for workers employed in the titanium dioxide industry.

Due to the use of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in everyday products, increased exposure in bodies of water (i.e. the aquatic environment) is expected. For example, a washing out of particles from paint or color, which are used outside of buildings and are exposed to wind and rain is conceivable. Likewise, particles from sunscreen-treated skin may reach surface water or wastewater during bathing or showering.

Administration of very high doses of nanoscale titanium dioxide (TiO2) causes damage to cells. There are no such high doses in everyday life though.

Animal experiments have shown that inhaled titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles are deposited in the lungs of the animals where they can trigger temporary inflammatory reactions.
